On the mid-semester break, several UQMC members headed up to Brooyar, the utopia of sandstone sports climbing in SEQ. Brooyar never disappoints; climbs have a range of grades, mid-teens to mid-twenties, and heights, eagles nest boasting 45m routes, so there is something for everyone.
For me, a trip highlight is always top belaying someone up a route at Eagles Nest or Point Pure at the end of the day and watching the sunset over the pine plantations.
For others, it might be climbing hard. With some noteworthy efforts by:
Yimin his first real lead climbing trip finding The Enticer (17) “easy”, he also led up Beyond the Black Stump (19), Mechanical disadvantage which is 30m long (15) and I even found photographic evidence of him having a go on Little Wednesday (25).
Marty put his all into his attempt on Little Wednesday and wrecked his hand, getting the most flapper I have ever seen from a single move.
Michael Green, who also led up Beyond the Black Stump (19), had a crack on little Wednesday (25) and Dream Catcher (20).
Micky, who redpointed Spike (20) on lead, after specifically coming to Brooyar to send that climb.
Jack, Steven and I had a great time hang dogging on Shake and Bake (24), but sadly none of us clipped the chains.
Jacob, who set up and redpointed (or is close to redpointing?) The Great Devoid (22) and Little Wednesday (25)
Belle and Will learning how not to whip on Right of Passage (21) and Dreamcatcher (20), respectively. Sadly, both are on crutches and will be out of action for six weeks ☹
Daniel left alone on The Great Barrier Reef (13 - where you rappel in) after Wen chucked the rope down instead of setting up an anchor.
Ruby, Eric, Michael Day and Sandra are all relatively fresh to leading climbing and were trying hard and learning lots!
In short, make sure you get yourself to the next Brooyar trips (whenever that may be) for classic climbs, spectacular sunsets, bevies by the campfire, and generally good times. Brooyar is also a great crag to get ready for the type of rock and climbing style you will find at Bluies.
Also, special thanks to Ruth (VP) and Jazzi (Climbing Coordinator) as activity leaders for the trip, and Teliah, whom we are grateful for looking after Belle and Will. All of you have positive belay calm, and I hope it will pay dividends soon.
