On Sunday night, we all meandered into Urban Climb Milton full of ambition for the competition ahead. Some were excited and some were anxious to meet our QUT team members!
We soon gathered around to hear Igor announce our teams. He controlled the crowd by tapping into our child like brains and making us clap with him. After getting into our teams some of us tried to devise strategies. Others accepted their fates. A few last minute drop outs meant Steve, Brian and Allan who forgot to sign up got to climb. Hooray!
A late start meant we had two hours to climb and would finish by 10pm. However most of us soon realised a lot of that time would be spent trying to figure out how the routes worked. Are we allowed to use the corner of this wall? Are we supposed to jump to the other side across the floor? Does that count as a first attempt? Who knows! But we were all having plenty of fun.
Many offensive looking tights could be seen across the gym. They came in all types of patterns and colours and they truly had no shame. As time started to fly by, many of us ran downstairs to try our luck with chin-ups and hang boarding. For some there was major success, and for others an embarrassing realisation that we couldn’t do as many chin ups as we thought.
Finally, time was up and we all found our crumpled pieces of paper and ticked off as many sections as we could. We assembled upstairs for an impromptu catwalk to show off the aforementioned tights. The team with the most hectic tights won some sweet prizes, and then we all enjoyed some pizza together. Congrats to the winners and the rest of you... good luck next time!
Also a huge thanks to the route setters and everyone involved with organising the whole event!
