The History of UQMC

Welcome to the UQMC History page!

UQMC has a very rich history full of adventure and fun. However, UQMC was not always officially UQMC, as it is a combination of two clubs: U.Q. Bushwalking Club (UQBWC) and the U.Q. Rockclimbing Club (U.Q.R.C.C.), but the spirit of both these clubs and the traditions are very much still alive within UQMC. The UQBWC was founded on the 26th of April in 1950.

The History pages contain information on the historic Timeline of UQMC, many pictures taken from the 1950s to now, and a lot of archived documentation. As there is so much information accumulated over the years, the UQMC Archivists Meike Go and Nicholas Tierney, have decided to split these into multiple pages. You can look for topics by subject and by document. However, if the archivists think a document is worth reading, they will highlight it for you.

Beware: this page has a lot of information, so you should not be surprised if suddenly 3 days have gone past without you knowing, because you were so into the old UQBWC magazines or the "Rise and Fall of the Barney Hut"!

To help you navigate a bit more, you can skip through the different sections or pages here:

Most of these archived documents are all donated to the UQ Fryer Library, as these well-read heroes are more capable of actually handling old documents and the archives would be saved from being lost, a flood, a fire or another natural/unnatural disaster. If you wish to access these files in real life, you should make an appointment on their website. The archives are not allowed to leave the premises, but UQMC has scanned most of it in, so you can also access most of it through the website.

UQMC Pictures Archive

UQMC has changed a lot of over the years, not only as a club, but also through time. UQMC has black-and-white pictures from as early as the 1950s, going all the way to today.  We hikers and climbers love to document ourselves. Don't we?

Unfortunately, this page is still under construction, and will hopefully be done in 2023.

UQMC Documents Archive

UQMC has a lot of documentation about various things, such as the archived "Hey Bob" magazines, the older guidebooks, some documents from UQBWC and UQRCC, and other documents - including correspondence and trip reports.

UQMC is still undertaking efforts to present these documents in a better way, so please have patience as during the year more information will be added here. UQMC is trying to match some of these trip reports and magazine articles with the pictures, but this is a lot of work - so again, still undergoing.

However, feel free to read some of the old magazines in the original (scanned in) versions or the retyped versions. Have fun!
